The new phase of Syrian Revolution begins. Foreign Ministerial Meeting of the Arab League ended in Cairo last Sunday evening. The organization called on the establishment of UN-Arab League Joint Peace-Keeping Force in Syria. Â The twenty-two countries of the Arab League agreed to freeze all kinds of diplomatic relation with Damascus. Monitoring Team assigned in Syria will also halt its activity. On the contrary, they have decided to open contact with Syrian opposition group and provided political and economic assistance.
Syrian government under President Bashar al-Assad stated they refuse the Arab League's decision. Damascus accused the decision of the Arab League is based on the Arab order. Whereas the new draft constitution has finished to be arranged. According to President Assad the constitution will lead Syria to the important phase, namely free election. Meanwhile, victims keep on falling. According to the UN there have been 5,400 killed in Syrian Revolution. The Arab League and the UN have failed to stop the bloodshed there.
While the US, the west and the Arab League urge Assad to step down, China and Russia defend it. The situation is getting complicated after the Al-Qaeda leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri called on to support the opposition to get rid of Assad. The world is shocked and asks whether Al-Qaeda also plays in the Syrian Revolution. What is their benefit if the regime falls? Zawahiri call to increase concerns that the terrorists are trying to make use of the situation. Last Friday a bomb rocked Aleppo City killing 28 people. The government accused Al-Qaeda as the perpetrator. However, the opposition party accused the government itself who did it to divert the attention.
How is Syrian Revolution going to end? Whether the fall of Assad will guarantee the peace in Syria? Will there be a civil war? Syria is dominated by Syrian minority group, while Sunni group which become the majority feels neglected. If Assad falls, there is a possibility for majority Sunni will take revenge. The experience happened in Iraq. After Saddam Husein and minority Sunni group were toppled down, the majority Shiite group took revenge. Up to now the condition in Iraq has not been quite. The Arab League and UN peaceful troop will not reconcile the conflicting parties as Assad refused the Arab League's decision. To avoid suspicion, the idea of British Foreign Minister William Hague is quite good that the peace keeping troops consists of non Western countries. If this is so, there is no reason for Russia and China to refuse it.
