The Solo Batik Carnival in Singapore a Success

Singapore, VOI News - The Solo Batik Carnival (SBC) in Singapore that took place on February 19 to 21 has been regarded as a success. “We were in the local news,” said Mufti Rahardjo, BSC leader. Mufti was also invited for lunch by the Singaporean State Council. “The invitees are the leaders of the groups which were considered to have given an impressive performance.” The carnival was held twice, on February 19 as a presentation to the Singaporean Prime Minister and February 20 to the Singaporean president.

US official expresses concern about Indonesia's film decree

Jakarta, VOI News - Deputy US Trade Representative Demetrios Marantis has expressed concern with the US over a decree being considered by the government of Indonesia that will result in imposing new restrictions on US film imports to Indonesia. "If implemented, the Culture and Tourism Ministry decree will disrupt bilateral trade of film at a time when we have been working to improve the bilateral relationship," Marantis said.

Army committed to using locally made main weapon systems

Medan, VOI News) - Army Chief of Staff Gen George Toisutta confirmed that the Indonesian army was committed to using domestically made main weapon systems (Alutsista). Speaking after installing the Bukit Barisan regional military commander, Maj Gen M. Noer Muis, here Friday, General Toisutta said Indonesia did not want to depend on foreign-made weapons in strengthening the army`s alutsista because they could any time become subject to an embargo. As a consequence of the embargoes, the TNI weapons systems which were necessary to maintain the sovereignty of the country became weak, he said, reiterating that the Army was determined to use locally-made "alutsista".

Borobudur Visitors Have to Wear Batik Sarongs and Sandals

Jakarta, VOI News - Visitors flashing their knees at Indonesia’s number-one tourist attraction, the ancient Borobudur temple, will have to wear Batik sarongs under a new plan to protect the site’s dignity. Temple manager Purnomo Siswo Prasetyo told AFP on Wednesday tourists wearing shorts and mini-skirts would be politely asked to don a sarong for the duration of their visit to the Buddhist temple in central Java. He said the rules were put in place after locals and visitors complained about the attire of some tourists.

Surakarta Organizes Chinese Batik Festival

Surakarta, VOI News - Efforts to promote Chinese culture are carried out in many ways.  In Solo, one of these is by organizing a Chinese Batik Festival. The head organizer, Febri Dipokusumo, said that they do not display batik made in China. “But batiks influenced by Chinese culture. The batiks are made in Indonesia, by Indonesian batik makers,” he said. Nowadays there are many Chinese textile products on the market, including batik with various motifs. But, he said that the batik available in the market were not Chinese batiks, but Chinese textiles with batik motifs. “ So in reality the general public does not know yet what Chinese batik looks like,” he said.

Indonesian feature film in running for award in Rotterdam

Jakarta, VOI News - The experimental film “At the Very Bottom of Everything” by Indonesian independent filmmaker Paul Agusta is currently in the running for the prestigious Dioraphte Award at the 39th International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), which will end on Feb. 7. At the Very Bottom of Everything, or Di Dasar Segalanya, partially funded by the Hubert Bals Fund of the Netherlands, tells the story of a young woman’s struggle with Bipolar Disorder.  The film, which was entirely developed and shot in Indonesia, provides an intimate look into the often life threatening illness and  the damage it does through highly
