Surakarta Organizes Chinese Batik Festival

Surakarta, VOI News - Efforts to promote Chinese culture are carried out in many ways.  In Solo, one of these is by organizing a Chinese Batik Festival. The head organizer, Febri Dipokusumo, said that they do not display batik made in China. “But batiks influenced by Chinese culture. The batiks are made in Indonesia, by Indonesian batik makers,” he said. Nowadays there are many Chinese textile products on the market, including batik with various motifs. But, he said that the batik available in the market were not Chinese batiks, but Chinese textiles with batik motifs. “ So in reality the general public does not know yet what Chinese batik looks like,” he said.

The festival will be run from February 6 until March 31. It will display 500 Chinese- influenced batiks at Ndalem Wuryaningratan, in Slamet Riyadi Street. According to Febri, the oldest ones were made in the 1800s.

”The most prevalent motif is the ceramic motif,” he said. Besides organizing the exposition, there will also be a fashion show and a talk show on the history of batik and its philosophy. Febri said he hoped that with this event, the general public would know more about Chinese batik, so they can differentiate between local batik products and Chinese textiles with batik motives.

He also hoped that batik craftsperson were more motivated to innovate. “Because the quality of their work is not inferior to Chinese batik. Moreover compared with Chinese textiles with batik motifs,” he explained. Head of the Batik Kauman Tourism Village Association Gunawan Setiawan supported the activity.

According to him, the festival will have a positive impact on the Surakarta Batik industry.
“We will be able to know more about Chinese batik and this will push US to be more creative in creating new motifs, so that we can compete, including with Chinese textiles with batik motifs,” he said.

He said he was sure that the entry of Chinese products into the market would not unseat the Surakarta batik market. ”As long as each have their own respective characteristics,” said Gunawan. ti
