Indonesian Davis team beats Malaysia 5-0

Kuala Lumpur, VOI News - The victory of two Indonesian singles tennis players Sunu-Wahyu Trijati and David Agung Susanto, complemented Indonesia`s winning streak to 5-0 against the Malaysian Davis team here Sunday. They were competing in the first round of the Davis Cup, Group II, Asia-Oceania zone, at Run Razak stadium in Kuala Lumpur. David Agung Susanto beat Mohd Assri Merzuki 6-3 6-3, and Sunu beat Ariez Elyaas 6-4 6-3, earning the Indonesian Davis team a 5-0 victory over Malaysia.

Beating Thailand, Indonesia reaches Thomas Cup Semifinals

Kuala Lumpur, VOI News - Indonesia proceeds into the semifinals of the Thomas Cup on Thursday, sweeping past host Thailand 3-0. Its shuttlers needed just 78 minutes between them to see off the Group C runner-up in qualifying at Nakhon Ratchasima. Singles victories by Taufik Hidayat and Sony Dwi Kuncoro sandwiched a doubles win by Markis Kido and Alvent Yulianto Chandra, setting up a semifinal with Japan. Taufik saw off Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk 21-15, 21-19 at No. 1 singles, and Sony beat Suppanyu Avihingsanon 21-10, 21-12.

Indonesian Bid to Host The 2022 World Cup Seems over

Jakarta, VOI News - Indonesia’s surprise bid to host the 2022 World Cup seems to be over after a government official disclosed that the priority should be to improve the standard of the national team. The ambitious bid by the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) relied on financial support from the government, who said they were more concerned with the team improving on their FIFA world ranking of 136. “PSSI has been asking for the government to give a government guarantee and declaration.  The guarantee has not been granted at this stage,” Youth and Sports Minister Andi Mallarangeng said here Saturday.

Indonesia fails to qualify for Asian Cup finals

Jakarta, VOI News - Indonesia was forced to bury its dreams of qualifying for the Asian Cup final after crashing to a 2-1 home defeat to Oman on Wednesday. The loss confined Indonesia to the bottom of the Group B with 3 points after three draws and two defeats. Indonesia will be away to Australia on March 3 for their last group match, but a shock win over the World Cup qualifier will not take Benny Dolo’s squad to the Cup finals.

PSSI Confident of Government Funds for World Cup Bid

Jakarta, VOI News - The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) is confident that the country’s government will provide the necessary funding to support their ambitious bid to host the 2022 World Cup. “We’re waiting for the government to make their decision whether they will back the bid,” PSSI secretary-general Nugraha Besoes said here on Monday.

Indonesia ranks third at SEA Games, overtaking Singapore, Malaysia

Jakarta, VOI News - Indonesia moved up to third from fifth position on Wednesday at the 2009 Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) with 32 gold and 37 silver medals, leapfroging Singapore and Malaysia. Indonesia earned six gold medals on Wednesday including from 100 meter sprinter Suryo Agung, and Agung Prayogo in the men's 1000 meters.
