Malaysia Orders Armor Vehicles from Indonesia

Bandung,  VOI News -  Malaysian Ministry of  Defense  will order around thirty armor vehicles made in PT Pindad in 2010. However  the ministry still waits for the First Article or  the prototype of armor vehicle that must be sent by PT Pindad to Malaysia before the contract is signed. Malaysian Ministry of  Defense team has visited PT Pindad to check  the type of armor vehicles Anoa 6 x 6 to be ordered.

Lack of Women in Workforce Costs Asia-Pacific Billions: Report

United Nations, VOI News - Women in the Asia-Pacific region have little economic and political power, impacting economic growth prospects of developing nations, the United Nations said in a report released on Monday. According to the U.N. Asia-Pacific Human Development Report to mark International Women's Day, the region ranks near the worst in the world on issues such as protecting women from violence or upholding their rights to property.

What Australia Says about Indonesia's Surprise Success Stories

VOI News - Many countries are going badly. Indonesia was always going to be one. Or so we thought. It's turned out to be one of the surprise success stories. For Australia, Indonesia was always the dark zone of dread, where bad things happened with worse to come. This wasn't entirely baseless. Sukarno's communist demagoguery was real. The brutal repressiveness of Suharto's military dictatorship was no figment of the imagination. But when Suharto's regime fell and the Indonesian economy collapsed simultaneously in 1998, it seemed to be the worst-case scenario.

At Least 41 Dead in Turkey Quake

Istanbul, VOI News - A magnitude 6.0 earthquake killed 41 villagers in eastern Turkey early on Monday, local officials said, as rescuers worked to free survivors trapped under the rubble. The quake woke residents from their sleep when it struck at 4:32 am local time (0232 GMT), centred on the sparsely populated area of Basyurt in Elazig province. It was followed by 30 minor aftershocks.

Bullock wins best actress Oscar for "Blind Side"

Los Angeles, VOI News - Sandra Bullock won the best actress Oscar, and her first Academy Award, on Sunday for her role as a suburban mom who takes in a homeless black teen and guides him to a football career in the "The Blind Side." Bullock`s Oscar victory marks the high point in a career that has spanned more than 20 years, during which she became an American sweetheart blessed with a natural comic touch that propelled commercially successful films beginning with "Speed" through to last year`s box office hit, "The Proposal."

Oil rises to near $82, extending Friday's gains

Singapore, VOI News - Oil prices rose to near US$82 a barrel Monday in Asia, extending gains from Friday amid signs the global economy may be improving. Benchmark crude for April delivery was up 45 cents to $81.95 a barrel at midday Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.29 to settle at $81.50 on Friday.
