Sudanese gov't signs ceasefire deal with key rebel group

Doha, VOI News - The Sudanese government late Tuesday signed here a ceasefire agreement with the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), a key rebel group in Darfur, in a big step toward ending seven years of conflicts. The temporary ceasefire deal was considered a prelude to a permanent peace agreement, which has to gain the support of other rebel groups in the western Sudanese region.

Chinese Schools 'behind Cyber Attacks on Google'

Beijing, VOI News - The cyber-attack on Google’s computers which may result in the search giant pulling its Chinese operations has been traced to two Chinese schools. Two education institutions – Jiaotong University and Lanxiang Vocational School, which has links to the Chinese military – were involved in the internet attacks on Google and up to 30 other U.S. companies, according to the New York Times.

Tanks guard palace as Niger junta tightens grip

Niamey, VOI News - Niger`s new military rulers posted tanks and trucks mounted with machine guns around the presidential palace Friday, a day after toppling veteran strongman leader Mamadou Tandja in a bloody coup. Military pick-up trucks mounted with automatic machine guns were also stationed in front of the prime minister`s office and the foreign ministry, an AFP correspondent said.

Conference to show how communities can reduce risk from climate change

Tanzania, VOI News - Climate-change experts from around the world meet this month to share the latest knowledge about how communities can reduce their vulnerability, and how government policies can help make this happen. Delegates at the 4th International Conference on Community-based Adaptation to Climate Change in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania will include representatives of governmental and intergovernmental agencies, research institutions and nongovernmental organizations.

South Korea leader says he's ready to meet North Korea's Kim

Seoul, VOI News - South Korea's president says he is willing to meet with North Korea's leader to discuss its nuclear weapons program despite a recent flare-up in border tensions. "I am always ready to meet with Chairman Kim Jong Il," President Lee Myung-bak said in an interview with the BBC aired Friday, according to a text released by his office. "There is no reason not to meet (him) even within this year" if it promotes peace on the Korean peninsula and North Korea's nuclear disarmament, he said.

Haiti earthquake: Head of UN, and other key employees, missing

Port-au-Prince, VOI - The United Nation's is saying the head of the UN mission in Haiti is missing along with other key personnel after Tuesday's earthquake. There is mounting concern about the loss of some of the most experienced aid workers in Haiti at a time when they're needed most. The devastating earthquake that struck near Port-au-Prince, Haiti on Tuesday has cost hundreds of Haitian lives, based on reports so far, and destroyed thousands of homes and much of the basic infrastructure of the capital city. But it may also have killed some of the most experienced aid workers in the impoverished country, which could slow assistance efforts in the days ahead.
