Bullock wins best actress Oscar for "Blind Side"

Los Angeles, VOI News - Sandra Bullock won the best actress Oscar, and her first Academy Award, on Sunday for her role as a suburban mom who takes in a homeless black teen and guides him to a football career in the "The Blind Side." Bullock`s Oscar victory marks the high point in a career that has spanned more than 20 years, during which she became an American sweetheart blessed with a natural comic touch that propelled commercially successful films beginning with "Speed" through to last year`s box office hit, "The Proposal."

China, US seek to put tensions behind them

Beijing, VOI - U.S. envoys hope to ease a two-month spike in tensions with China, but differences over the issue of new sanctions against Iran have emerged as a snag even before this week's talks in Beijing can begin. Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg and Senior White House Asia adviser Jeffrey Bader are aiming to put relations back on track following frictions with Beijing over trade, Tibet, and Taiwan.

Chile quake death toll hits 708 as rescue ramps up

Concepcion, Chile – Heroism and banditry mingled on Chile's shattered streets Sunday as rescuers braved aftershocks digging for survivors and the government sent soldiers and ordered a nighttime curfew to quell looting. The death toll climbed to 708 in one of the biggest earthquakes in centuries.

Chilean Quake, Tsunami Warning for Indonesia Lifted

Jakarta, VOI News - The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) has lifted its tsunami warnings for several countries, including Indonesia, a day after Chile was hit by a powerful earthquake measuring 8.8 on Richter scale on Saturday. The PTWC said on Sunday that a number countries which were previously predicted to possibly be hit by tsunamis following the Chilean quake, were now safe from threat.

Chile quake kills 122, triggering tsunami threat across Pacific

Santiago, VOI News - A devastating 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck Chile early Saturday, toppling buildings and bridges and triggering a tsunami that threatened every country around the Pacific Ocean. President-elect Sebastian Pinera said the massive earthquake killed at least 122 people and seriously damaged the South American country's infrastructure. President Michele Bachelet, who declared a "state of catastrophe," said the death toll would surely rise.

Chile quake kills 85 people in Southern region

Santiago, VOI News - Chilean President Michelle Bachelet said a powerful earthquake killed more than 85 people on Saturday in the southern Maule region alone, state television reported. The government had earlier announced 78 deaths across the whole country.Following the powerful earthquake that rocked Chile, the Pacific island territory of French Polynesia was placed on tsunami alert on Saturday.
