U.S. general says military still aims to catch bin Laden alive

Washington, VOI News - Sanley McChrystal, the U.S. commander of NATO troops in Afghanistan, said Wednesday the military still aims to catch al-Qaeda terror network leader Osama bin Laden alive. McChrystal, briefing reporters in Washington via teleconference from Afghanistan, said if bin Laden enters Afghanistan, the military would certainly try to "capture him alive."

Venezuela obtains K-8 military planes from China

Caracas, VOI News - Venezuela has received its first shipment of six Chinese-made K-8 military planes, and President Hugo Chavez says his government aims to buy 40 in all. Chavez announced plans last year to buy the trainer and light attack jets. Chavez reiterated Saturday that he turned to China and Russia for weapons because the United States has bared arms sales to Venezuela.  Several planes flew overhead during the ceremony at an air base in the city of Barquisimeto.

UN chief making second post-quake visit to Haiti

United Nation, VOI News - Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he is heading to Haiti on Sunday for his second visit since the devastating earthquake to prepare for the upcoming donors conference to raise money for reconstruction. Ban flew to Haiti on Jan. 17 - five days after the quake - for a first-hand look at the widespread destruction, which included the collapse of U.N. headquarters in Port-au-Prince. He returned to New York with the bodies of Haiti mission chief Hedi Annabi and his deputy, Luiz Carlos da Costa, who were killed along with 99 other U.N. staff members.

No Plan to Delay Obama's Indonesia Visit, Says White House

White House, VOI News - President Barack Obama's trip next week to his childhood home of Indonesia will be no vacation and is unlikely to be delayed by his health reform drive, the White House said Thursday. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Obama, who is expected to leave the United States next Thursday, would attend a democracy promotion conference and highlight counter-terrorism measures during the visit to Indonesia.

Bullock wins best actress Oscar for "Blind Side"

Los Angeles, VOI News - Sandra Bullock won the best actress Oscar, and her first Academy Award, on Sunday for her role as a suburban mom who takes in a homeless black teen and guides him to a football career in the "The Blind Side." Bullock`s Oscar victory marks the high point in a career that has spanned more than 20 years, during which she became an American sweetheart blessed with a natural comic touch that propelled commercially successful films beginning with "Speed" through to last year`s box office hit, "The Proposal."

China, US seek to put tensions behind them

Beijing, VOI - U.S. envoys hope to ease a two-month spike in tensions with China, but differences over the issue of new sanctions against Iran have emerged as a snag even before this week's talks in Beijing can begin. Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg and Senior White House Asia adviser Jeffrey Bader are aiming to put relations back on track following frictions with Beijing over trade, Tibet, and Taiwan.
