China space program selects first women astronauts

Beijing, VOI News - A Chinese proverb says women hold up half the sky. In the future, they'll be doing it from space. The Chinese space program's first two women astronauts have been selected and may take part in missions to China's planned space station, the official Xinhua News Agency reported Wednesday. To be considered, the women had to be married, Xinhua said, quoting Zhang Jianqi, a former deputy commander of the country's manned space program.

Malaysia Orders Armor Vehicles from Indonesia

Bandung,  VOI News -  Malaysian Ministry of  Defense  will order around thirty armor vehicles made in PT Pindad in 2010. However  the ministry still waits for the First Article or  the prototype of armor vehicle that must be sent by PT Pindad to Malaysia before the contract is signed. Malaysian Ministry of  Defense team has visited PT Pindad to check  the type of armor vehicles Anoa 6 x 6 to be ordered.

Lack of Women in Workforce Costs Asia-Pacific Billions: Report

United Nations, VOI News - Women in the Asia-Pacific region have little economic and political power, impacting economic growth prospects of developing nations, the United Nations said in a report released on Monday. According to the U.N. Asia-Pacific Human Development Report to mark International Women's Day, the region ranks near the worst in the world on issues such as protecting women from violence or upholding their rights to property.

What Australia Says about Indonesia's Surprise Success Stories

For Australia, Indonesia was always the dark zone of dread, where bad things happened with worse to come. This wasn't entirely baseless. Sukarno's communist demagoguery was real. The brutal repressiveness of Suharto's military dictatorship was no figment of the imagination. But when Suharto's regime fell and the Indonesian economy collapsed simultaneously in 1998, it seemed to be the worst-case scenario.

Oil rises to near $82, extending Friday's gains

Singapore, VOI News - Oil prices rose to near US$82 a barrel Monday in Asia, extending gains from Friday amid signs the global economy may be improving. Benchmark crude for April delivery was up 45 cents to $81.95 a barrel at midday Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.29 to settle at $81.50 on Friday.

S. Korea, US start drills despite N. Korea's threat

Seoul, VOI News - South Korea and the U.S. kicked off annual military exercises Monday, a day after North Korea denounced the training as a rehearsal for invasion and threatened to attack the allies. About 18,000 American soldiers and an undisclosed number of South Korean troops are taking part in 11 days of drills across South Korea, according to U.S. and South Korean militaries.
