World diplomats urge resumption of Mideast talks

Moscow, AP - U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton suggested Friday that the United States and Israel have found a way around the worst disagreement the two allies have faced in years while International diplomats set goals for new U.S.-backed peace talks aimed at establishing an independent Palestinian state. The so-called Quartet group of Mideast negotiators met in the Russian capital to set the stage for peace talks in which the United States would be a go-between.

Israel Defies the United States on Settlements

Jerussalem, VOI News - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday rejected any curbs on Jewish settlement in and around Jerusalem, defying Washington in Israel's deepening crisis with U.S. President Barack Obama's administration. "For the past 40 years, no Israeli government ever limited construction in the neighborhoods of Jerusalem," he said in a speech in parliament, citing areas in the West Bank that Israel captured in 1967 and unilaterally annexed to the city.

Israeli leader urges calm over row with Washington

Jerusalem, VOI News - Israel's prime minister is urging calm following anothr stern rebuke from Washington over plans to build 1,600 apartments in contested east Jerusalem. Benjamin Netanyahu told his Cabinet on Sunday "not to get carried away and to calm down" over the crisis with the U.S. News of the construction plan emerged during Vice President Joe Biden's visit to Isral last week.

Saudi to set up index fund for foreigners

Cairo, VOI News - The head of Saudi Arabia's market regulatory agency says the country will launch a stock market index fund by the end of March into which foreigners can invest. Capital Market Authority head Abdulrahman al-Tuwaijri, in comments published in Sunday's edition of al-Eqtisadiyah newspaper, that despite the move, Saudi Arabia is still reluctant to allow direct foreign investments in the exchange.

Israel Seals Off West Bank for 48 Hours

VOI News - Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak has ordered the army to seal off the West Bank for 48 hours until midnight on Saturday, an army spokesman said. The action was taken "for security reasons" including a risk of attacks, the spokesman said Friday. The area was sealed off at midnight on Thursday. The army said some medical and religious workers, teachers, journalists and others would be exempted.  Israeli police have also said they would bar Muslim men under the age of 50 from prayers on Friday at Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa mosque compound, one of Islam's holiest sites, fearing unrest.
