Indonesian diplomats in striving for the national interests

The recent installment of some Indonesia’s diplomats by president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono proves that there imust be a new spirit of administering the Indonesian foreign policy.

In their diplomatic duties, all Indonesian diplomats must play their major role in International political arena. Indonesia has passed a number of tremendous moments. Take for instance; there had been two important moments namely the Asian-African Conference taking place in Bandung in 1955 and the long New Order. In August 8, 1967, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia singed the Bangkok Declaration so-called ‘ASEAN’. During these moments, Indonesia has shown significant roles in implementing its foreign policy in international forums. Based upon the Asian-African conference, many countries not only in Africa but also in Asia had successfully freed themselves from foreign dependency.
Nowadays, Indonesian people are wondering how the Indonesian diplomats should carried out the national interests of Indonesia as sovereign country and Indonesian people in general. The fact is that there have been some blocs whether political or economical perspectives. In its foreign diplomacy, Indonesia under the leadership of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has colored some international forums. Take for example; more recently, Indonesia has taken a positive initiative to hold inter-faith dialogue among many nations. Some western countries appreciated this tremendous initiative. In addition, Indonesia has mediated the long conflicting factions between Hamas and Fatah in Palestine. In the Forum of G-20, Indonesia as the only developing country in Southeast Asia has shown its key role in sharing some economic issues with developed countries such as the United States of America, Japan, European countries and China.
These days, under the second term of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono with vice-president Boediono, what should Indonesian diplomats strive for Indonesian interests in international foreign policy? The new ambassadors must show their best in striving for the national interests of Indonesian people. To some extent, compared with some neighboring countries such as Malaysia and Viet Nam, Indonesia must be aware of pursuing many of its shortcomings, especially an economic aspect. In a living standard, Indonesia must be in parallel with its neighboring countries in Southeast Asian region.  With the implementation of China-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement -CAFTA, Indonesia must benefit from this regional free trade bloc.
