The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

MISCELLANY, 17 OCTOBER 2015

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is celebrated every year on October 17 throughout the world. It was officially recognized by the United Nations, but the first commemoration of the event took place in ParisFrance, in 1987 when 100,000 people gathered on the Human Rights and Liberties Plaza at the Trocadéro to honor victims of poverty, hungerviolence and fear. This call was made by Joseph Wresinski (1917–1988) founder of the International Movement All Together for Dignity -ATD Fourth World.

The UN's independent expert on human rights and extreme poverty, called on countries to recognize the serious fact, that in this world there are 1.4 billion people living in extreme poverty, among five people on average there is one person who does not get basic life assurance demanded by humanity. Poverty has become one of the important factors that must be considered and be the main focus of the government of Indonesia. The poverty rate in Indonesia is said to  have been reduced since 2014 when Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono served as president of Indonesia.

In 2015, the seventh President of Indonesia Joko Widodo launched various programs to alleviate poverty in Indonesia.Development of remote areas in Indonesia became one of the main focus of Joko Widodo’s government. President Joko Widodo also has a strong desire to make Indonesia as the world maritime center. The Sea is a major pathway in Indonesia that must be used appropriately. At present Indonesia is slowly but surely beginning to improve all the facilities related to marine. People’s welfare in remote areas in Indonesia that can only be reached by sea becomes a new  target  to poverty reduction in Indonesia.
