President Joko Widodo discusses national issues with Islamic scholars

President Joko Widodo has invited tens of Indonesian Islamic scholars or ulemas to discuss various national issues. At least, 23 ulemas from a number of regions in Indonesia have visited Merdeka Palace of Jakarta on Monday (17/4) to meet the President. The Chairman of National Shura Council, KH Mahrus Amin said that his visit to Merdeka Palace was related to the plan on educating a million Islamic preachers. KH Mahrus stated that the President appreciated his proposal and has planned to inaugurate the program of a Million Preachers Defending the State at the People's Consultative Assembly building on May 2, 2017. The education and training program for preachers are needed to enhance unity among 250 million people of Indonesia. He also planned to improve the preachers' quality in Indonesia to deliver better Islamic education. KH Mahrus added there are many people who do not receive a fair Islamic study. Therefore, his side is prepared to educate a million preachers to share knowledge. (ROL) 

 

President Joko Widodo: Government to pay medical expenses of Novel Baswedan

The government will bear the medical expenses of the Corruption Eradication Commissions (KPKs) senior investigator, Novel Baswedan undergoing treatment in a Singapore-based hospital following an acid attack by two attackers. President Joko Widodo had received and read a letter from the KPK Chairman, Johan Budi, This was affirmed by Spokesman of the President, Johan Budi in Jakarta on Monday (17/4). Joham said that the letter contained a request made to the government to pay the costs for medical treatment being given to Baswedan.  He added that the President has agreed to honor the request by channeling the funds allocated in the presidential budget. Meanwhile, Baswedan will undergo a surgery next week as part of the treatment for his eyes, which are affected due to the acid attack. (Ant)

 

 

Central government welcomes idea to develop Disneyland in Boyolali

The central government, represented by Cabinet Secretary, Pramono Anung, has welcomed the idea to develop Disneyland in Boyolali, Central Java, which is expected to offer wide-ranging benefits to the communities residing in the surrounding areas. Anung stated at the presidential palace in Jakarta on Monday (17/4) that Indonesia is wide open to investments that have multiplier effects on the regional development. The palace’s approval for building Disneyland or other world-class amusement parks aims to bring about an economic improvement in the local areas, including Boyolali. Moreover, Boyolali’s strategic location near the investment triangle covering Solo, Klaten, and Yogyakarta is believed to hold potential for greater development. Anung also remarked that developing Disneyland is a considerably large investment. Indonesia is really open to the idea and expects it to be truly realized. If the project becomes a reality, it will be the fourth Disney-themed amusement park in Asia after Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Shanghai. (Ant)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

State Defense Program to commence in Manado

The Defense Ministry will roll out the 2017 Bela Negara (State Defense) program in Manado, North Sulawesi, that will coincide with the Interfaith, Inter-Ethnicity an Intercultural Tolerance Parade. Indonesian Defense Minister, Ryamizard Ryacudu said at his office in Jakarta on Monday (17/4) that North Sulawesi is selected for the commencement of the State Defense program because the region is the gate to eastern part of Indonesia. He also stated that every citizen is entitled and required to participate in the program in state defense and professionalism context. Minister Ryamizard remarked that Indonesian Defense Ministry will cooperate with the Education and Culture Ministry and the Religious Affairs Ministry to craft the curriculum for the program. He views that the program is expected to produce cadres in a bid to raise an awareness of state defense. (Tempo)

 

Ministers coordinate closely to keep inflation at bay

Finance Minister Sri Mulyani said in Jakarta on Monday that state ministers are coordinating closely to keep inflation at bay during the month of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr 2017. She remarked that the ministers have been monitoring supply and demand of commodities that can cause inflation, including sugar, rice, chicken meat and cooking oil. She also said that the government also keeps an eye on cartel practices. Minister Sri Mulyani said that the government will prevent cartel price increases. The government will monitor import activities and purchase of goods. The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) foresees high inflation rates in May and June 2017 ahead of Eid al-Fitr. BPS reported that March deflation was 0.02 percent. The main contributor to deflation was lower food prices, particularly chili peppers and shallot. Year-to-date (YTD) inflation stands at 1.9 percent and year-on-year (YoY) inflation rate is 3.61 percent. (Tempo)
