President Joko Widodo Calls for Maintaining Unity in Diversity

President Joko Widodo calls for all countries in Asia and Africa to honor plurality, and make the spirit of unity in diversity as the spirit of Asia and Africa. It was said by the Head of State in the 62nd Anniversary of the Asia-Africa Conference at the State Palace on Tuesday (18/04/2017). “I believe, the Asia-Africa cooperation can be improved. And I also hope that the spirit of unity in diversity is also the Asian-African spirit,” said President Joko Widodo. To all the people of Indonesia, President Joko Widodo also advised not to be easily tempted by racial and religious issues that weaken the nation. He also said the Indonesian people should not be afraid to fight against intolerance and violence in the name of anything. The President called on to continue to strengthen the joint commitment in maintaining and caring the portrait of the Indonesian nation, namely Bhineka Tunggal Ika, unity in diversity. The commemoration of the 62th Anniversary of the Asia-Africa Conference was attended among others by Vice President Jusuf Kalla, the former President, Megawati Sukarnoputri and all ministers. On the Occasion all attendants of the event signed a declaration of "Live and Let Live Asia-Africa Unity and Diversity". The phrase "Live and Let Live, Unity and Diversity" is known a quote from the speech of the first Indonesian President Soekarno in the Asia-Africa Conference in 1955. (voi/trans:rini)

 

North Kalimantan readies 15 hectares to build Bulungan prison

North Kalimantan Governor Irianto Lambrie stated that the government of North Kalimantan has prepared 15 hectares of land for the construction of a new prison in Bulungan District. Lambrie noted in a statement on Tuesday (18/4) that the provincial administration has released the land in the Gunung Seriang Village of Tanjung Selor, and it will also build road infrastructure in the area. He explained that considering that the prisons in the districts of Tarakan and Nunukan have been operating at overcapacity, the development of the new prison in Bulungan is expected to solve the problem. He asserted that the province’s limited budget will not hinder its development. Legal and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly agreed the plan and the ministry will help to design the prison having adequate facilities. According to the minister, the authority will need Rp70 billion to construct the prison. He also welcomed the governor’s plan to involve private companies in the construction through the corporate social responsibility program. (antara)
