COMMITTED TO TOBACCO CONTROL, INDONESIAN GOVERNMENT TO HOLD NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON TOBACCO

Indonesian government through the Health Ministry in collaboration with the Tobacco Control Support Center- the Association of Indonesian Public Health Experts (TCSC-IAKMI) will hold the 4th Indonesian Conference on Tobacco or Health 2017 in Jakarta on 14-16th of May. Director of Health Promotion and People Empowerment of the Health Ministry Dedi Kuswenda on Friday in Jakarta said that the conference is aimed at facilitating various sides, the government, civil society, private sectors and academicians and achieving common sense and commitment to reach the Sustainable Development Goals. In addition, the conference is also aimed at building agreement to integrate tobacco control program and sharing best practices in tobacco control.     

 

“The role is to build commitment of stakeholders regarding measures on tobacco control as key to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. To build an agreement to integrate tobacco control measures and to achieve SDGs,” he said.

Furthermore Dedi Kuswenda stated that the government hoped that the meeting will produce commitments to strengthen tobacco control policy in Indonesia. The government also expects that the conference will produce policy options on tobacco control within the country either in the national or regional level.  The World Health Organization has put Indonesia as the third largest tobacco market under China and India. The data shows that cigarette’s epidemic in Indonesia has reached an alarming point that more than one third of Indonesia’s population is categorized as smokers. (ndy)

 

Bali Arts Festival Returns for 39th time

The Bali Arts Festival is back for the 39th time this year. The month-long annual event is always held from June to July every year, coinciding with the school holiday season. The dates for this year have been set from June 10 to July 8. The festival will see visitors enjoy an array of cultural performances and lesser known traditional rituals. There will also be village dances such as the Ngusaba Guling ritual from Timbrah village, where all villagers present a suckling pig as an offering, resulting in hundreds of suckling pigs being piled together in one place. There will also be performances from nine regencies around Bali as well as from other areas outside of the island, such as Banyuwangi and East Nusa Tenggara.
