Govt blocks telegram app after long observation: President

The Indonesian Government blocked Web-based Telegram application only after making a long observation, and it was not an immediate decision, according to President Joko Widodo (Jokowi). President Jokowi told the press in Jakarta on Sunday (16/7) that the Government has conducted a long observation, and as a nation they have to prioritize state security, public security. He said thousands of social media accounts have been categorized as potential to disturb the national security. Therefore, the decision has been made. The President said the public still could use other social media applications. Despite efforts by operators of the social media application to filter certain accounts, thousands of accounts are still in operation and being used to build international communication related to terrorism. He said the Communication and Informatics Minister had talked about the matters with the operators for several times. President Jokowi also remarked the Communication and Informatics Minister had conveyed about the issue not only once or twice. (antara)


President Jokowi inaugurates Academy of State Defense

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) inaugurated the Academy of State Defense (ABN), a Defense education and training center, run by National Democratic Party (Nasdem), on Sunday. President Jokowi was greeted by Nasdem Chairman Suryo Paloh in the ABN Building located in Pancoran, South Jakarta. Among officials present in the inauguration ceremony were Attorney General Agung Prasetyo, House Speaker Setya Novanto, Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Wiranto, Chief of the National Police General Tito Karnavian, Environmental Affairs and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya, and South Sulawesi Governor Syahrul Yasin Limpo. IGK Manila, governor of the Academy, said that the academy was established to respond to the national developments and situation. The Nasdem Party has viewed that the country is facing serious problems concerning nationalism and patriotism that tend to disappear. Meanwhile, Surya Paloh has expressed his hope that the Academy of State Defense of Nasdem Party would bring benefits to the community, nation and the state. The academy will accept some 500 students, mostly Nasdem cadres, every year.(Antara)


Malaysia, Indonesia May Take EU Plan to Curb Palm Oil Imports to WTO

Malaysia and Indonesia plan to raise the prospect of European Union curbs on the imports of palm oil with the World Trade Organization, both countries said in a joint statement on Sunday (16/07). A resolution by the European Parliament in April called for the EU to phase out by 2020 the use of vegetable oils in biodiesel that are produced in an unsustainable way leading to deforestation. The resolution includes palm oil, an important commodity for Indonesia and Malaysia, which produce nearly 90 percent of the world's palm oil. The statement, following a meeting between Malaysia and Indonesia's trade ministers, said that the two Southeast Asian countries would meet at the end of July to "discuss and coordinate" palm oil issues, including organizing a joint mission to Europe to "engage with relevant parties and stakeholders." The two nations will coordinate plans via the Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC), a joint initiative by Malaysia and Indonesia to work together in managing stockpiles and supporting prices. Indonesian Transportation Minister launches online licensing system

Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi in Jakarta on Sunday (16/7) launched online transportation licensing system in a bid to improve efficiency and avoid illegal levies. On the occasion, Budi also launched fleet management system for state-run transportation operator PPD and conveyed rewards for drivers and machinist. Minister Budi said the government would continue to facilitate transportation operators, so they do not have to come to the ministry to get the licenses as it would take time. The minister also said, development in transportation system is undoubtedly important to make it competitive in global transportation system. Meanwhile head of the Greater Jakarta Transportation Body (BPTJ) Bambang Prihartono said, the agency is ready to enter the era of online transportation licensing system to make it easier and more efficient. Indonesia ready to conduct MALE drone flight test in 2019

Indonesia, through the Agency for Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) and its consortium, is ready to conduct a flight test for its larger Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) drone in 2019. The Engineering and Designing Industry Technology of the BPPT, Wahyu Pandoe said in Jakarta on Sunday (16/7), MALE drone can fly for a longer distance, more loads and longer flight duration which can reach 24 hours. It will be used for border surveillance operations as part of the efforts to maintain security and defense. The drone is being built by the BPPT in cooperation with its consortium, consisting of, among others, Indonesia's aircraft maker PT Dirgantara Indonesia, state-owned electronic firm PT LEN, the Ministry of Defense and Security and the Bandung-based Institute of Technology. Previously, BPPT has developed a number of types of drones such as the Wulung and Alap-alap PA-4 and Alap-alap PA-5. The Wulung drones which were built for surveillance activities were able to fly at a radius of 120 kilometers for four hours at an altitude of 8,000 feet. (antara)


Indonesian grabs one gold medal at International Chemistry Olympiad

The Indonesian team of Senior High School (SMA) students grabbed one gold and three silver medals at the 49th International Chemistry Olympiad which was held in Bangkok, Thailand from July 6 to 15. It was stated by head of the directorate affairs of Senior High School students at the Culture and Education Ministry, Suharlan, in Jakarta on Sunday (July 16), as quoted by Antara. The gold medal was grabbed by Dean Fanggohans from state Senior High School "SMAN" 8 Pekanbaru. The three silver medals were respectively won by Fahmi Naufal Rizki from SMA Kharisma Bangsa, Tangerang Selatan District), M Ridho Setiyawan from SMAN 1 Tahunan, Central Java and Mario Lorenzo, from SMAK BPK Penabur Gading Serpong. 80 countries participated in the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO). The International Chemistry Olympiad is an annual academic competition for high school students. The first IChO was held in Prague. At the competition, every student is tested for the ability in the field of theory and skill in doing experiments (practice) in the laboratory. (antara)


Indonesian Team Wins BOIJC Championship 2017

The Indonesian Team has won the General Champion of the senior category in the Bali Open International Judo Championship III in 2017. The National Team, which is strengthened by athletes from eight National Training Centers, won 5 gold medals and 2 silver medals. Chairman of the Indonesian National Sports Committee of Bali, Ketut Suwandi, after closing the Bali Open International Judo Championship 2017 in Denpasar, Sunday (16/7) expressed his appreciation for the fighting spirit of the Indonesian Judo athletes. According to him, this event was a proof of progress of the Indonesian Judo Association of Bali that was able to hold an international championship and has been recognized by All Indonesian Judo Association.

“We are excited to see the enthusiasm of the athletes playing with high spirit and this is also an opportunity given by Bali's PJSI (Association of All Indonesian Judo) to its athletes to have experience, to see good playing techniques from other countries. This is also an incredible and invaluable opportunity,” said Ketut Suwandi.

The last match of Bali Open International Judo Championship III at Lila Buana Denpasar Sports Center was hard. Around 190 Judo athletes from ten countries took part in the match on the last day. The women's best senior player was awarded to the Indonesian Athlete Ardelia Yuli, who played in the 57-Kilogramm class. Meanwhile, the best male and female junior players are Tokash Harsh from the Indian Individual Team and Kadek Desi Kartika Sari from the Balinese Akeno Sport Judo. (kbrn/nrl/trans: r)
