President Joko Widodo to officiate Silangit International Airport

President Joko Widodo will officiate the upgrade of Silangit Airport in North Sumatra into an international-class airport in October to boost tourist arrivals and promote Lake Toba as a prime destination. Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs, Luhut B. Pandjaitan said in Jakarta on Monday, that the upgrade of Silangit Airport would help increase air connectivity to support economic and tourism growth at Lake Toba, which had been included in Indonesia's 10 new emerging destinations. The government has to be ready for the expansion; Minister Luhut said that he has recently met with investors from China, Japan and Singapore who were keen to invest in tourism infrastructure at Lake Toba. The upgrade includes extension of the runaway to 2,650 meters from 2,400 meters, the expansion of apron capacity and the airport terminal with a total investment of Rp 369 billion or around $27.7 million dollars. The new apron will be able to accommodate two Boeing 737-500 planes and four Boeing 737-900 ER planes, while the renovated terminal will have an increased capacity of 1 million passengers from 36,500 passengers annually. President Joko Widodo describes social media as vicious 

President Joko Widodo said that he was asked about the nature of Indonesia’s social media by several world leaders such as King Salman of Saudi Arabia and Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. He answered the questions by describing that Indonesia’s social media realm could start a war between right and wrong. During a lecture at Padjajaran University in Bandung, West Java on Monday, President Joko Widodo said that he was asked about the nature of Indonesia’s social media. Is it cruel and it’s vicious. President Joko views that a large number of social media users have developed a bad habit of spreading hoaxes, hate, and slanders, which are difficult and nearly impossible to control. Despite being a difficult task, President Joko Widodo reminded that social media negativity must be stopped from growing even larger, considering that it has a major effect in transforming the country’s political landscape. Tourism and transportation ministers attend Lake Toba Charm Carnival 2017

Lake Toba Charm Carnival 2017 that was held on Monday, September 10th, in Balige, Toba Samosir regency was attended by high-ranking government officials such as Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya and North Sumatra Governor, Erry Nuradi. The festival was a continuation from the previous Parahyangan Charm Carnival that was held in Bandung on August 26 and attended by President Joko Widodo. Minister Luhut said in his opening speech that the President Joko Widodo was asking him about the preparation for Lake Toba Charm Carnival. He is very concerned with this kind of cultural carnival and he hopes that it will continue to other parts of Indonesia. This event will be conducted in several different places and will feature a lot of activities but there’s only one goal which is preserving culture. Minister Luhut who is of Batak ethnicity delivered some of his speech in Batak traditional language. (JP)


BI asks government to stay alert for Fed rate hike

Indonesian central bank -Bank Indonesia -BI has suggested that the government and the House of Representatives -DPR stay alert for the possibility of an increase in benchmark interest rate by of the US Federal Reserve next year. BI Senior Deputy Governor, Mirza Adityaswara stated at a hearing with the government and the House Commission XI at the parliament building in Jakarta on Monday that in responding to the situation in 2018, Indonesia should better exercise caution as the trend of the Fed Rate hike will continue. This year, it may be raised twice, but next year, it will certainly be raised. BI must keep monitoring whether it will be raised thrice or more. He also noted, if the Fed Rate increases, the currencies of emerging markets, including Indonesia, will become less attractive. BI has projected the rupiahs exchange rate against the dollar for 2018 to be between Rp13.5 thousand to Rp13.7 thousand per one US dollar. Meanwhile, the rupiahs exchange rate assumed in the draft 2018 state budget is Rp13.5 thousand per dollar. (Ant)


Musical concert business improves in Indonesia

The stable business climate in Indonesia has spurred the growth in the festival businesses and music concerts. It’s evident with the fact that musical performances from international singers always gets sold out. The genre doesn’t just stop at Western pop but also from Korea’s K-Pop and many more. The list of international bands and singers that held a concert in Indonesia starts from the Bangtan Boys (BTS), Bryan Adams, to BigBang personnel G-Dragon. Ed Sheeran is said to hold a concert in November.
