President Joko Widodo has called for a paradigm change in the policy to increase farmers profit margins through agrobusiness process. The president stated at a limited meeting at the Presidential Office on Tuesday (12/9) that if the government wants to increase profit to farmers, it must change the paradigm. They must enter the business sector, the agrobusiness sector (in particular). Also present at the meeting were Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman, Minister of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Layout/Chief of the National Land Agency Sofyan Djalil, Minister of National Development Planning/Chief of the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) Bambang Brodjonegoro, East Java Governor Sukarwo, and Central Java Governor Gandjar Pranowo. The President remarked that with the new paradigm the farmers will have their own seed industry and modern production applications. In recent times, it is not difficult to have modern rice mills if banks support the farmers based on feasible calculation. The meeting also discussed a number of steps to improve the farmer’s welfare. (antara)

Bank Indonesia: July`s Retail Sales Decline

A survey conducted by Bank Indonesia (BI) shows that retail sales in July declined as the public consumption returned to normal after Ramadan and Idul Fitri. The fact is reflected by the real sales index (IPR) that stood at 209.9 in July 2017, declining by 3.3 percent year-on-year. The central bank (BI) reported recently that the declining retail sales occurred in the food and non-food groups. On the regional basis, the decline in IPR occurred in several cities, such as Semarang, Denpasar, and Manado. In August, the retail sales figure increased by 5.3 percent when compared to the previous month. The increase occurred in the food group at 10.4 percent after declining by 0.3 percent in the previous month. The retail sales growth for the non-food group also improved from -7.8 percent to -1.9 percent year-on-year. The survey also indicates price hikes at the retailer level in the next three months. Bank Indonesia said that the indication is supported by the general price expectation index that increased to 135.5 from 133.3 in the previous month.
