South to South Film Festival 2010

The South to South Film Festival is a chance for urban people to see the impacts of climate change all over the world.

The festival, which takes place in Jakarta this weekend, features 23 films about the environment, with several countries represented including Brazil, Peru and the United States.

Organiser Siti Maimunah says although South to South brings stories from many different places, from oil drilling in Indonesia to gold mining in Peru, the themes are always the same.

“When there is a rich area of natural resources and local people do not have voice of determination, and people outside come and just grab their resources, there are human rights issues there and destruction of property” she said.

“The victims are different, but it’s the same problem - that people must fight for their rights if they want to make sure they will be saved.”

Viewers also have the chance to catch some local stories, with around half the films coming from Indonesia.  The opening night film, Anak-Anak Lumpur, or Children of the Mud, is about an environmental disaster caused by oil drilling in East Java.

Ms. Maimunah said the festival would promote awareness and help increase solidarity between Indonesia’s urban and rural population.

“We want to facilitate the public to know what's happening in the area of resources extraction and environmental problems,” she said.

“We want to bring pictures by film to urban people, so that they can aware that their lifestyle is responsible. Solidarity is increasing because awareness is increasing.”
